Welcome Message

Happy Spring - Summer everyone!

As we head into exam / exhibition season, we wish you the very best of luck with it all. We hope everything goes your way and you are all looking forward to some downtime over the Summer.

I know we are! It's been a busy few months here at the Library. We welcomed new members to our team: library assistants, Elaine & Noel, and part-time staff, Lisa & Naomi.

We added lots of new resources to our online and print collections, including a number of study skills books and publications with a Limerick theme.

We also hosted our first ever BookFace Challenge and participated in TUS' inaugural Research Week!

Meet New Library Staff

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Elaine Fahy and Noel McNamara, who have recently joined the Library Team. Elaine & Noel introduce themselves below.

“Hello, I’m  Elaine Fahy, originally from Ashbourne, Co.Meath but was working for Dún-Laoghaire Rathdown Public Libraries since 2017. My husband (Patrick Barry) and I decided to relocate to Limerick City when he applied for the position here at TUS International Office. Shortly after, I found a library assistant position in TUS. So far, we both find our experience here enjoyable and staff here are really supportive and friendly. I enjoy working as a library assistant, it is a very varied role and I love engaging with both staff and students. Outside of work I love acting, performance and theatre. I once performed in Dublin’s oldest theatre, Smock Alley Theatre".

“Hello, I’m Noel McNamara. Originally from Dublin, I am joining TUS following over five years working with public libraries in South Dublin. I am delighted to be joining the library team at TUS and am looking forward to assisting students and staff with their academic and professional needs.  Although a proud Dub, I have close links with Clare. I am a keen supporter of Dublin and Clare GAA. Hobbies include Gaelic football, golf, surfing and cycling".

We also warmly welcome Lisa Cadogan (pictured left) and Naomi Makyao, two new part-time staff, to the Library Team.

Lisa and Naomi will be working between Moylish and LSAD campus libraries on mornings, evenings and Saturdays over the exam period.

Staff Book Reviews: Fiction

Carrie Soto is Back - Taylor Jenkins Reid

Now that tennis season is nearly upon us, this book is a timely read. Focusing on a fictional sports star, interspersed with a spattering of real life events from ‘80s and ‘90s America, it is also a clever and enjoyable Summer read.

Carrie Soto aka ‘The Battle Axe’ is a force of nature who dominated the elite tennis circuits in her twenties, breaking all records.  Aged 37, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in a bid to reclaim her title.

Her journey is not an easy one, it is emotional as well as physical, full of highs and lows. You will be on the edge of your seat at times following Carrie's progress in the Grand Slam tournament. Sit back and enjoy the ride!

The Four Winds - Kristin Hannah

This book is set in Texas in 1934 during the Great Depression and The Dust Bowl Era, a time when millions of farmers and their families had to emigrate to the West Coast in the hopes of a better future.

It is a multi-perspective story about strong resilient women: Elsa Martinelli and her daughter, Loreda. Despite her family suffering, Elsa refuses to leave the dying family farm believing that if you work hard the rain will soon come. Meanwhile her husband is so desperate, he abandons his family in the middle of the night.

Elsa then makes the agonising decision to take her two children and journey across the desert to California in hopes of a better life. Loreda, now in her teens is constantly arguing with her. This is truly compelling read that enlightens you to the harsh realities of living during the Great Depression.
