Even the most experienced presenter becomes anxious. It is normal and should be expected.
Here are some suggestions for how to reduce anxiety:
- Practice, practice, practice – by yourself or with someone. During practice sessions you can work out the bugs and add polish to your presentation.
- Watch others – see what works for them and what doesn’t. Watch videos of great speakers (Ted Talks).
- Just before going up, breathe deeply – it can reduce your heart rate.
- Remember that you and the audience have the same goal – they want you to succeed as much as you do!
- Even if you know what you’re going to say, have an outline in front of you in case you freeze up – this can reduce worry that you will forget what you have to say.
- Some nervousness is good, as this energy can be used to heighten your alertness and make you more animated.
- Smile during your presentation. Be relaxed, poised, and at ease on the outside, regardless of how you feel internally. Acting relaxed can help make you relaxed.
- Keep presenting! Your anxieties decrease the more presentations you give.
