Introduction to the referencing tool in MS Word.

How do I set the Referencing Style?

  •  undefinedClick on the References tab on the top menu.
  • The tool you will be using is in the Citations & Bibliography section.
  • The first thing you need to do is set your Referencing Style - for example, Harvard.
  • Click on the button to the right of Style.
  • Select Harvard.

Note: Check with your lecturers which referencing style to use. It may not always be Harvard.

How do I add in-text Citations for a Book?

  • Point the cursor at the point in the document where you want to add a citation.
  • Click Insert Citation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Start by choosing the Type of Source from the drop-down box – in this case, Book.
  • Fill in the relevant sections of the form and Click OK to generate an in-text citation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • The in-text citation is automatically added to the document, as in the example here.

 

Adding Citations for Other Sources

Journal Article

  • Start by choosing the Type of Source from the drop-down box – in this case, Journal Article.
  • Fill in the relevant sections of the form and Click OK to generate an in-text citation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Website

  • Start by choosing the Type of Source from the drop-down box – in this case, Website.
  • Fill in the relevant sections of the form and Click OK to generate an in-text citation.

  • The in-text citations for the Journal Article and the Website are automatically added to the document, as in the example here.

How do I add the Reference List?

  • When you have added citations for all of your sources, you can use the referencing tool to automatically
    generate a Bibliography or Reference List.
  • On the References tab, click Bibliography.
  • Click on the template of your choice, and Word will automatically generate a Reference List for you.

Note: The list is in alphabetical order as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing system.
