Open Resources in Art & Design

This page provides access to textbook repositories along with other selected open resources. 

The purpose of these disciplines specific pages is to showcase content that might be of interest to faculty who are considering adopting open educational resources for use in their classes. This list of content is by no means exhaustive, and more resources will be continually added.  

The nature of open educational resources is very collaborative and it is in that spirit that we encourage any comments about the content featured on this page or recommendations of content that are not already listed here.

Open Textbooks

  • Fine Arts Textbooks (College Open Textbooks)
    An online collection of free fine-art textbooks available online or for download.
  • Lumen Learning -  Art History
  • Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of Art. Authored by four USG faculty members with advance degrees in the arts, this textbooks offers up-to-date original scholarship. It includes over 400 high-quality images illustrating the history of art, its technical applications, and its many uses.
  • Open Textbook Library - Browse a wide selection of textbooks on topics related to art.
  • Project Gutenberg - Art Bookshelf
    This list highlights selected art books and books about artists, including practical methods and specialties, as well as general works on art and art history, plus visitor guides to art expos, galleries, and museums.
  • Knowledge Unlatched is a not-for-profit organization that makes scholarly books in the social sciences and the humanities free for anyone to read.
